I really like chocolate cake. A hearty chocolate cake is nearly always my pick for a dessert or special treat.
I particularly like this recipe when I’m making my own homemade chocolate cake from scratch. It has a deep chocolate flavour without being too heavy. This recipe has been on high rotation for birthdays and other special food occasions in our house for many years.
The cocoa powder is the ingredient in this recipe that gives the cake its rich chocolate flavour, so I recommend using a higher quality cocoa if you can.
Like the simple vanilla butter cake, the 3 eggs in this recipe give you a rich cake that tastes just as good, if not better, the next day. Super helpful for plan ahead party preparations!
This recipe also makes lovely cupcakes. Bake for a much shorter time than a larger cake, checking after 20-25 minutes in the oven.

To top it all off – icing or frosting the cake
I rarely have the patience to ice my cakes, but fortunately our girls are old enough to do it themselves if they are in the mood. Feel free to make icing or frosting if you like, or simply sprinkle the cake with some sifted icing sugar or cocoa. For a tasty chocolate frosting, add a little sifted cocoa to the butter cream frosting recipe I used on my vanilla butter cake.

Inviting a few extras to your party? Celebrating with a sporting team? This recipe can be doubled or tripled to make a very large cake in a baking tray. However, something to keep in mind is that the cooking time will not be doubled or tripled. Reduce the oven temperature slightly and increase the cooking time by 15 or 20 minutes, then check for doneness.
