Hi, I’m Elissa, and Five Beans Food is my place to share the food I love.
Many years of feeding a household on a budget has been my “on the job” cooking training. We cook and eat (usually) simple family food, food for sharing, and food for fun.
And why Five Beans Food? Do you remember the Jack and the Beanstalk story? Jack’s return from his errand at the marketplace with five ordinary looking beans turned out to lead him on a surprising adventure.
So, we are five ordinary human beans eating our way through the surprising adventure of family life. Our food style is simple and tasty ordinary food.
We love vegetables but we are not vegetarian. We enjoy a variety of grains but we are not gluten free. We try to be healthy and we also enjoy special treats. In recent years what we eat has slowly but surely changed towards healthier habits. Real life happens regularly too, so our food choices are also shaped by taste, convenience, and cost. We have a peanut allergy in the house so we know what it’s like to read every label and make adjustments to recipes when needed.
I also think that food and hospitality are great ways to love and serve others, so you will also find ideas to help you share the food you cook.
I use metric measurements. Egg sizes are completely random as we have our own chickens.
Comments are welcome – please keep them friendly and relevant.
I have advertising on the site through Google Adsense. I also have affiliate links for products that I have used and would recommend, such as books, kitchen products or courses. This means that if you make a purchase from one of the links to products or services on this site, I may earn a small commission with no extra cost to you. I do not otherwise accept rewards for reviewing or promoting products. There were a couple of exceptions to this in 2016: I was given a cookbook and a bag of oranges. All opinions are my own.
More about us
We have 3 young teen Cherry Blossoms and live in suburban Canberra, Australia. We also welcome a lot of people through our house, and often to join us in eating or drinking. By the way, we really like Japan, so every now and then you will see some Japanese inspired food.
I am a follower of Jesus. Most of this blog is about food, but if you want to read the bible, have a look here.
We have plenty to eat. Not everyone does. Think about sharing the love – there are plenty of agencies out there trying to deal with poverty, and Compassion is one we support.
For a bit more, have a look at this post which was the official public launch of the blog and where I explain some of the reasons for starting a food blog. Also, my favourite posts for last year are listed in this post
